The way we experience the outside world is not some veridical, direct representation of an objective, unambiguous state of affairs. The same seems equally true of our experience of being a self. Experiences of selfhood might depend on very similar principles and mechanisms to experiences of the outside world. They may just be inferences that the brain makes about particular kinds of sensory signals which are put together in various ways. This has been called the mapping problem by charmes himself.
