Einstein had made the wrong prediction for the deflection of starlight around the surface. He only got a value that was one half of the actual value. It wasn't until his, I guess 1912 paper where he gets close enough that Carvermead points out that with one extra step, if he'd taken the equation one step further than he had in the paper, Einstein would have realized at that point that he had been off by a factor of two. The 1911 paper had been used over and over and over again by people to show different things about general relativity.
