In both personal and military matters, Franco was straightforward for the most part. He kept no journal and went few personal papers he had or still mostly in his family's possession. No surprise that at some point Franco began to believe his own press: "He did not become puffed up, much less behaved badly" The effort to achieve legitimacy was thus more prottorian or Bonapartist than fascist; seems about right.
