The Great Renunciation of the Bodhisattva
In meditation practice we are actually practicing renunciation. We need to practice this renunciation every time we let go of mind states that are causing suffering. The Bodhisattva on the eve of his enlightenment sat down under the Bodhi tree in what is now Bodhaya resolved to sit there and not to get up until he had achieved full realization. Well fortunately for him it happened that night. Joseph Campbell calls this third stage the great struggle.
