The notion that an extinction is bad and that species are good so fundamental to not only my world view, but to my personal identity. When i started really digging into the environmental ethics literature about the the value of diversity, i found myself in a confusing position. There's more than one type of value, and i i unpack them in the book. But then you get into complicated ethical questions like, is it still intrinsically valuable if there's nobody around that values it intrinsically? Is it somehow a sort of metaphysical property that exists in the biodiversity itself?
