Morality in the 21st Century

CHAPTER

The Shadow of the Future

Our networks tend, on average, to keep us trustworthy. The reason is that if i am interacting with you anonymously and no one else is watching, all the incentives are for me to cheat you. If we imagine playing the same game and there are other people watching us play, they're going to be watch meand if they see me cheat you, they know i'm not a trustworthy character. This is how morality began in late days, when we were hunter gatherers living in small groups depending on one another.
