In the fairy tales, the forest is almost synonymous with devouring. To enter means to be devoured, says author David Perry. He asks: How do we navigate these forces of devouring and devoured? And how does Vasalisa navigate this formidable place? She feeds her little doll; she calls those who have faculties greater than hers. In doing so, she navigates the trance state, the place of devouring, said Perry. As a result, "she becomes the liberator's hut," he writes.
