I draw a distinction between America today versus America for most of its post World War II history. It feels increasingly like the values conversation is a proxy for a set of insecurities about the durability of the liberal international order. And so it does feel like the values, the quote values of the US system play a larger role in greasing the wheels of international diplomacy or halting the process than they used to.
