The reconstruction of the past by non narrative stors led to a new kind of history and led to a renewed interest in the past. If one knows the way of the life of a people, one can conjecture what its laws are. Statutes and ordinances are the clear mirror of a nation's character. Natural law is no good because the only natural law we know is self preservation. That is true of all men everywhere but it isn't enough.
