The First Annual Cluster Chuck
A history professor at the University of Pittsburgh, William Campbell, got bored and decided to build a trebuchet. This is the medieval weapon commonly, though incorrectly called a catapult, that uses a double pendulum with a counterweight to throw rocks long distances. Last week, 70 students, physicists and historians got together for what they've named the first annual cluster chuck. They loaded various cabbages, cantaloupes and grapefruit into the treBuchet, took bets on how far they would fly, then proceeded to chuck them the length of the campus.
