Understanding and Understanding

Einfilung and understanding are two radically different attitudes. To understand an individual case does not mean to justify or to excuse it. The scope of understanding is the mental grasp of phenomena which cannot be totally elucidated by logic, mathematics, praxiology and the natural sciences. No appeal to understanding could justify a historian's attempt to maintain that the devil really existed.
