The french monarchy is a very recent development in terms of how far back in history it goes. Thisis doesn't really get going until louis the fourteenth, right? And so his ability to to tamp all that down meant that they couldn't fund their own armies any more. It's not like back in the 12 hundred, of the 11 hundreds, the french monarchs were able to claim anything resembling absolute power. Nobody was able to claim absolute power. Feudalism was ut were contractual relationships between kings and barons, barons and dukes, dukes and vicomtes.
