Do You Know if You Did the Right Thing?

In the past tense when talking about it, because that's how people experience iti in consciousness. You don't know whether or not you would have made the same choice every time. From fact that your consciousness is able to imagine this alternate reality in which you did the right thing, you extrapolate that you could actually have done differently. And therefore you make the mistake of thinking that the deed didn't follow necessa ly from your own nature. What you imagined could have been real, and the prospect that you could have done otherwise, but that you didn't, that you failed to act morally out of a free choice.
