There is a gap in federal and some state laws that basically allows domestic abusers to still own firearms. The current senate deal would address this by prohibiting people from owning guns if they'd been convicted of domestic violence or were subject to domestic violence restraining order. Currently, only domestic abusers who are married to live with or parent a child with a victim are barred from having a firearm. But as recent as march of this year, republicans weren't having it.
