The Supreme Court's affirmative action ruling was bound to be controversial and it was. But the question of what constitutes fair is complex, says John Avlon. Some people are telling you otherwise: The affirmative action ruling is opposed by exactly the sorts of thinkers and partisans who point out that the court is out of touch with public sentiment. That alone isn't enough to discredit any ruling yet. When it starts to be felt, the gun case, there is every indication that it will generally be unpopular.
