The Importance of Kinship in Kinship Studies

The taboos governing who is marriageable and who you can have sex with are variable but it's not by genetic closeness. Navi-Strais argued that what was the most important thing about kinship was the way that it organized exchange relations between different groups. So for him the incestipu was important because it encouraged relations of exogamy in other words out marriage between groups. Some of these ideas came from Marcel Mos's classic work on the gift which was also all about exchange.
