Goes With the Wind Is the Equivalent of a Novel

Gone with the wind is essentially at the halfway historical point between the Civil War and today. The parts that everybody responds to is the fact that Scarlet is a survivor, says Mitchell. But then we have to stop and think about the fact that this is the equivalent exactly of loving a novel about a Nazi who refuses to be beaten down after the war is lost. She was an enslaver and a white supremacist. People get angry because it threatens their sense of their own innocence.
