How to Link Game Mechanics With Gamer Motivation

People of certain mindsets react differently to these games. Martin Seligman's experiments on dogs where he shocked their poor little paws and taught them learned helplessness that there was nothing they could do to better their situation. So what in games determines if somebody will give up on a challenge versus bracing for it and tackling it? How can we link game mechanics with gamer motivators or types?
