There is no consensus on why we dream. We do know that dreaming takes place during one of the various levels of sleep known as rapid eye movement or REM sleep. This is a stage where our brainwave activity reads closest to that of the waking mind. So remembering your dreams can be tricky. Buckland and many others recommend trying to consciously program yourself to remember your dreams by telling yourself, I will remember my dreams before you fall asleep.
