The Importance of Open Ending in Canvas

Canvas is a plugin. Actually most features of Obsidian are plugins so you can turn off a lot of the features if you want. It's written as an extension, an expansion of core or was it even written as a plugin slash. If someone wanted to write their own canvas today, could they do that with the current plugin API? Canvas now becomes not just a place to describe relationships visually but also to like create a little desk for yourself inside of like a virtual space.
