In your book, you discuss graduation speech that writer and editor Leon V. Seltier gave at Brandeis in 2013. He said among other things that society had come to be dominated by instrumental reason. And then the psychologist Stephen Pinker replied that only through science could we come to know ourselves. I suggest that there's a kind of national reckoning with the cultural meanings of science in the wake of World War II.
