The Origins of Heavy Metals on Earth

Wenfei Fong is an assistant professor in the Physics and Astronomy department at Northwestern University. He says there are two major theories as to how heavy elements come into our universe. The first involves mergers of two neutron stars, which have relatively high densities. A second theory is that you have a massive star that ends its life as a supernova - it's created elements all the way up to iron.
