Design Directors Have a Lower Creative Authority Than Design Directors

In product development, authority tends to hew pretty closely to reporting structures. A design director has less creative authority than the design lead within a cross functional team. What i'm seeing more and more of is a recognition that we should organize reporting structures by function.
