Sam's First Fire
Sam saw his father reaching for him futilely as Sam fell back, collapsing with the floor into the basement. He landed on a shelf holding vacuum sealed trays of meat bound for the grocery store and then bounced to the hard cement floor. In the basement the fire and smoke weren't so bad yet, but there was no air at all. Even through his gear the heat was intense. It was all over him, squashing him, smothering him,. heating the air so hot it would burn his lungs if not for his mask. His dad had seen him fall.
