The History of Love Canal
Love Canal was declared a state emergency on August 2nd, 1978. The New York State government would evacuate and purchase the homes of 240 families living closest to the canal. Homeowners who had been left behind voiced their displeasure at every opportunity. President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the site to be a federal health emergency and approved emergency financial aid. These residents were offered an average of $35,000 each for their homes, well below market value.
