The End of Day's Speculation

The Maccabees, a small group of hardcore Jewish traditionalists, went Geria and waged war against the Seleucid monarchy. A body of troops sent to punish them and retake the city in 164, turned back when Antiochus died at an inopportune moment. So they'd gone through this very traumatic experience, but now they founded a dynasty known today as the Hasmonean dynasty. When the Romans come, and in 70 CE, finish the job that Antioch has started and actually destroy the temple, something that the Jews to this day commemorate in a big way.
