The History of Westernization in Japan

Westerners were brought in to do almost everything. Many of them had no idea what to do with their Severnspei and squandered it all on either gambling or failed business startups. The most significant change was the 1872 decision to introduce mass conscription. Samurai lost their hereditary privilege to bear arms, and a European-style mass army was introduced.
