The Curious Clinicians is a medical podcast that asks why. Today, we examine the physical exam finding that's often commented on but maybe not always well understood: fingernail clubbing. What causes a nail to be clubbed is when the normally concave angle of the nail bed becomes convex. A physician diagnosed his own endocarditis, described clubbing in himself, published it in a paper and that's how it became the sign today.
