James Bak: Buy American provisions often focus on final goods such as shoes, flatware and iPhones. But half of what the US imports are not finished goods but inputs to making stuff. Domestic content is a mandate that these inputs be made in America for products sold in the U.S. He says this can be extremely costly over the long term because it hurts competitiveness with other markets.
