The Life of Ray and Agnes
Agnes came to the house two months before my birthday, in the middle of winter. She was younger than the other kids, maybe ten or eleven years old and didn't talk much. Whenever Ray came in the room and she was in there, he would often just turn around and leave. I don't remember how long we sat around the table those evenings, nor do I have any memory of what we might have eaten. So I passed a couple of years in relative peace.
