Each area has like a sort of fortitude and enemy morale system. As you kill enemies you build up morale which is your effective level when encountering other enemies in the space. There are these banner spots throughout the level that as you claim one it sets Like a floor for your morale so your morale can no longer go any lower than that. And if an enemy kills you then you lose like All of their morale and their base morale goes up.
