AWS spent a lot of time engineering Athena's security posture for Spark. We reviewed hundreds of external security bulletins, as well as internal threat models to find a few themes we thought we could target in order to simplify the job of running serverless Spark securely. When your query is finished, the entire infrastructure is destroyed just as fast as it was created. You don't need to worry about cleaning up because there's nothing left behind. Every time you launch a compute session in Spark on Athena, it has the latest and greatest in terms of security patches in Spark runtime.
