Into the Open Sea, I Observed
We left two dogs on the rack, as being both large mastas. We did not care to have their additional weight on board our craft. When they saw us apparently deserting them, they set up a piteous howl and sprang into the sea. The nearer we approached the shore, the less inviting it appeared. Many casks, boxes and bales of goods floated on the water around us. Fritz could distinguish many tall ponds, and during his tow they would prove to be coconut trees. I am very sorry I never thought of bringing away the captain's telescope, said I.
