I Will Love You as Much as He Will Direct You
The main figure of the story white knights, as in the landlady is a dreamer. He falls in love with her but does not express it because she expects at any moment the return of a young man whom she has promised to marry. The moral posturing of the rejected protagonist is akin to the attic telling himself stories in order to pretend that he has some kind of control over his situation. Instead dostoyevsky's heroes are too timid and gnashing their teeth over the situation.
