Sentience is the intrinsic tendency towards self-preservation. It can exist at the whole organism level, but also at the level of individual cells. Machines aren't involved in their own existence. Everything about life is about existing. Rocks can continue to exist. We're not just existences. We're being and we can stop being when these processes fail.
