Is It False Modesty?

He was concerned, to a degree which he would never admit, with the impact that publication of er collections of his work would have on his reputation. He always said that that wasn't what bothered him. And i think he, he was er, he misrepresented his own motives to himself to a degree. So if you call that a former false modesty, well perhaps it was. But it was, it was a form of self protection. I think he was terrified that somebody would say, oh, this is all very low grade stuff, you know, w tbeput together. He just isn't that good at it. so i think that was what was going on there.
