In the early visual representations, there is this immense hierarchy between a figure like Columbus and his cross. And then there's always not really individual people that he meets upon arrival. Some Irish and many Italian immigrants in particular began to think of Columbus as a kind of founding father. He was Italian, he was credited with being the first one here in America,. etc.
