The Pain of Not Writing
There's this old joke, which is that painters like to paint, but writers like to have written. I think maybe right from a similar place, but for slightly different reasons. Fiction writers tend to write about things where they're sort of observing trends or insights in their community. So it starts in observation and kind of trying to classify observation. And then that is a compulsion to write because you go, "I'm going to get this thing out before the people do"
