The Importance of Protein Structure in Vaccine Design

The main protein on the outside of the virus, that's the obvious vaccine target. This protein can change its shape and that makes it hard for the immune system to target. A team at the US National Institutes of Health worked up the structure of this protein around a decade ago. That enabled them to develop a synthetic form that's locked into the shape we want the immune System to target. And so these three vaccines that have been successful in trials are all based on that same protein.
