The Consequences of Consumption in the GDR
In Albania, there's a strong sense that this human instinct to be consumer has to be suppressed. I was really taken aback by in many ways the extent to which he thought the stability of the regime depended on indulging it. And you can't just import genes and then think that will do it. The car ends up not being able to evolve as people's expectations shift. That seemed to me to make the GDR an unusual communist regime.
