For many of the early years, when Kim Jong-il's song was in control of North Korea, South Korea and North Korea were virtually equal. The discrepancy between the two started to emerge during the 1970s and 80s. And eventually, of course, South Korea moved from a military dictatorship to a full blown democracy. On the world stage, South Korea is flavour of the month. But while the South thrives, the outlook north of the border is bleak.
