The sons of Jacob are speaking and they recognize that to take them up on this offer will be to quote, become one people. This isn't the first time we've seen in the book of Genesis, the dangers of assimilation. Even when Israel is wicked and ungodly, the Lord still preserves them from assimilating with the peoples of the land.
