Fusion is not a chain reaction. You're having to supply huge amounts of pressure and of heat in order for the fusion reaction to occur. The minute you stop putting in all of that heating or whatever methods you're using to help compress it as well, the reaction simply ceases. And this is one of the reasons why some physicists describe the fusion reaction as inherently safe. It can't get any of these sort of runaway events that you can potentially get with nuclear fission.
