Mrs. Pace's husband had already left for London when the murder took place. She was told by her uncle that a man had arrived at their home in Elmer's Dale to pick him up before he got on the train. Mrs Middleton then went to tell her brother-in-law, but heard his voice and ran out into the hall where she almost collided with another woman. The two women were later joined by police who found Mr Pace dead from a single bullet wound through the head. Ms Pace says: 'In detective novels, clues abound, but here I could find nothing that struck me as out of the ordinary'
