René Girard was a French historian, literary critic and philosophical anthropologist who died in 2015. One of his central ideas is that we don't really have any individual desire. We actually pick up our desires from those around us. And this can lead to widespread aggression such as the 17th century religious wars in Europe. At least 60% of mortality in certain regions of Germany during the same presentation could be attributed to mimetic rivalry.
