The Adventures of Pedro Arias Avilla
The Spanish crown in the board of trade became enthralled with the idea of rivers of gold. The area of Darien was renamed Castilla de Oro and the crown made a commitment to exploit the region. Pedro Arias Avilla, more commonly known as Padreas would assemble around 1500 to 2000 men for the expedition. It would be the first such journey that they would actually invest in since sending Columbus West in 1492. Some key people in the expedition included Juan de Cuerveto, who would go on to explore North America and become the first European to cross the Mississippi River.
