Free indirect discourse is also called free in direct style or free in direct speech. Flaubert basically perfected it, but jane austen is where you first really see it used on a widespread basis. It's a way of letting the narrator dip into and out of consciousness very easily. You feel like you're more inside their minds, rather than just listening to somebody describe all these different people.
