The potter has the right to do whatever he wants with that marred lump of clay. He can use it to cry out, crucify him, give us barabbas and thus accomplish his purpose even through believing israel so proving god's promise hasn't failed. God can actually accomplish his purpose of redemption for the world even through unbelieving israelites. A hardened israelite saying, why am i to be blamed if my unrighteousness brings about your glory? And that's the interlocutor in the mind of paul.
