The Role of Martial Law in Colonial Industrialization

The 1619 Project is exploring the role of slavery in the American Revolution. In 1775, Virginia Governor Dunmore declared martial law across the colony. The move infuriated people on both sides: those that were already taking up arms and some loyalists. "Slavery absolutely was a horrific institution," says author Julian Zelizer.
