The Importance of Consciousness

Spinoza says there is no absolute or free will in the mind. We only think we're free because our consciousness sits between one of those causes and effects, he writes. Just because we watch over our own appetites, ideas and actions as they enter and leave our minds, we think that we're free. The French philosopher, Gile's Delirse, wrote that consciousness is only a dream with one's eyes open.
